History and Goal as a Visual Artist
With an education in Fine Art and Interior Design, I have dedicated my career to the visual arts through interior design, painting, custom commissions, and designing textiles. In 2014, after a career working in the corporate ‘design’ world, I decided to create independently, full time.
I first became enamored of water while growing up surrounded by its ever-changing glistening mood, in the NYC Metro area. Additionally, our family spent a lot of time at the beach. During one vacation in Miami Beach, at four years old, a rip tide pulled me under. Images of waves pulling me down, and the reflections coming through the surf had make a lasting impression. Those few desperate moments have stayed with me; burned into my brain through my entire life.
After college, while painting and struggling to support myself, I worked with an environmental remediation ( toxic waste clean up) corporation subcontracted through the government. At that time, I became aware of the degree humans had been contributing to pollution on Earth. It was the early 1990s, the start of a higher awareness of the global environmental crisis. For me, it had represented a distressing, but educational, period of life; forcing me to change my lifestyle and cultivate artistic themes to inspire others to do the same. During this time I began a two year study under the ‘Self- Realization Fellowship’ founded by Paramahansa Yogananda. It enhanced a period of intellectual, spiritual and creative growth.
For many years, I explored new, innovative art styles and themes. During the late 1990s, I began incorporating emotion and memories as a method to communicate the direction of my art. This is when the water imagery was brought forth.
By the early 2000s, I was exploring coastal landscapes, with a goal of finding an artistic voice to help the viewer connect and enhance a spirit of tranquility and relaxation. Painting water was a cathartic release for me, but more importantly, soothing to viewers. With all the chaos in the world, and in the art market, I felt my job as a creator was to remind others of beauty and peace.
By 2007 the result was my ‘Organic Coastal Waterscape Series.’ These collection of works were created combining mediums in oil, ink, oil pastel or with acrylic on various surfaces. They have emerged as one of my most widely recognized and well-regarded collections. People worldwide have used this series as an investment while creating an exceptional interior style for personal homes, offices and public spaces.
In 2011, an unfortunate workplace accident crushed both my hands and wrists. Doctors told me I would never paint again. Fortunately, after surgery, many months of therapy, hard work and sheer determination, I can continue the pursuit of my artistic ambition. I am filled with pride for my accomplishments in the face of adversity.
After years of effort getting to where I am today, I am eternally grateful for the support and encouragement I have received.
Although commercially admired, my work offers an underlying theme, one I hope will be most important:
“Bridging Visual Art and Education, my goal is to have work created to promote an understanding of the challenges we face regarding a changing climate. Although all aspects are important, I am focusing on Fresh Water and Living Oceans.
We are on the verge of a major turning point in human history… In my way, I would hope that someone will look at my abstract water paintings and be moved or inspired. Moved to respect the environment and our precious natural resources. Inspired to think creatively, outside the box.”
